Motion control in photography is a technique used to capture the still images of moving objects that enables precise control of camera movements. It can be used to facilitate special effects photography.
What is a freeze frame?
Freeze frame is used when there is a scene with an object that moves at a certain speed, the photographer can capture it with a high shutter speed, therefore freezing the action. ISO can also be raised in order to simultaneously achieve a better lighting quality for an image.
What is motion blur?
Motion blur is the streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being shot changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.

Artists Research
Jacques Henri Lartigue was born in June 13, 1894 and died September 12, 1986, he was a French photographer and painter, known for his photographs of automobile races, planes and Parisian fashion female models. In 1984 he received The Cultural Award from the German Society for Photography, and from my research many of his photographs are of daily leisure activities and sports, or showing emotion through a shot.
I have been influenced by the J H Lartigue's movement photography, as he captures motion in everyday life using the effects of weather, people and mainly women which I think is very inspiring.I have chosen these images as I feel that they all represent movement in life that I can capture. As the photography was taken a long time ago, I feel that I can approach my images in a more modern way. I feel like the first image is very powerful, as the freeze frame that has been captured creates the mood of happiness due to the positioning of her body, almost like she is 'on top of the world' and filled with joy. The second image shows the fast movement of a lady's skirt as she is dancing which has created a motion blur shot, this to me shows the excitement that she feels when dancing. I feel as if the third image successfully captures the moment before the model hits the floor, which gives the photo an element of suspense, as we cannot tell whether or not she will land properly or fall to the floor. I think the fourth image is very eye-catching as it freezes the moment the waves hit the shore and the figure in the image creates a mysterious feeling, like there is something beyond the waves that is intriguing or that the model in the image is having conflicting thoughts and looks beyond the sea to find peace. The final image illustrates to me the intensity of tennis as a sport as Lartigue has captured the effort that players put into the sport, this is very artistic in my opinion as it is taken from a low perspective.
(AO:1. You must ensure that several of the visual ideas/inspirations within the image bank are pursued. )
AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
I used a CANON EOS 1400D camera to take all of my shots to create the images below. I used a tripod throughout my entire shoot. The photographs that represent motion blur I did in a studio using a red head lamp, at an aperture of f22, IOS 100 and shutter speed of 1/2 a second, to create the effect of motion blur. The images that show a freeze frame were all taken outside and at an aperture of F9 IOS 200 and a shutter speed of 1/400.
Below are my best images, as I feel that they represent motion blur and freeze framing well. They are all inspired byJ H Lartigue's movement photography as they capture simplistic shots that create an emotive image.
AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
My idea for recording movement was inspired by JH Lartigue's movement photography and I based my photographs on movement created artificially, ranging from fast body movements to more slow/simple movements and gestures, I ensured I included some motion blur shots, although my artist mainly focused on freeze-frames. These motion blur shots I believe are simplistic in nature but through photography techniques create meaningful and interesting photography.
I like this image a lot as I feel like it represents the transition from sadness to happiness, showing the split second where a smile occurs. This is inspired by J H Lartigue's movement photography of people, which were created with slight motion, but results in an emotion filled image.
I chose this image as it represents excitement through a stereotypical jump that represents happiness, this was inspired by the photograph of the lady with the dog on the beach by J H Lartigue and is my best shot for capturing a freeze frame as my model is mid-air.
I chose this image as it represents J H Lartigue's movement photography of women and the punching action to me shows the empowerment of women, which I feel J H Lartigue excellently communicated through his photography.
This is my favourite image as I feel like it is a recreation of J H Lartigue's image of the ladies skirt moving, yet shows that motion through the flicking of hair. As I believe my artists original photo represents excitement, I think from this image I feel a sense of confidence instead, coming from the individual as it is a very dramatic action.
This photograph illustrates to me the feeling of anger in a passionate way, it shows a conflict within my model, and creates a deep feeling of confusion. This is directly inspired by the image by J H Lartigue ,where the man stands in front of the splashing waves. I feel like it could represent what is going on inside the the mind of the man, which I believe is cognitive dissonance.
I did not feel that my photos needed a lot of editing but my outdoor shots could do with a few adjustments so I put them into photoshop and used the tools below to produce better final images. I also edited my motion blur photos using the black and white point tool, to remove the high saturation of my models skin tone, and even out the background colour.
Photos to Improve
The image to the left could be improved by ensuring I achieve better framing by focusing on composition lines so my subject is in a more aesthetic position in the photograph, I also feel as though I could zoom out my shot to create a more structured background in my image. The image on the right could be improved by ensuring that my model received the correct instructions, as although there is a blur, there is not enough movement for it to be a successful motion blur shot. Also she is too far to the left in the framing which I think draws to much attention to the blank space which was definitely not my intention.
AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
My artist research was very helpful in inspiring the my approach when shooting my images, It would have been impossible to achieve these images if I did not have a tripod, as that is an essential part when recording movement. I had many opportunities to capture motion but my general image bank was not helpful as they would have required a lot more advance equipment to achieve professional looking shots, which unfortunately I did not have access to. I also found it a lot easier to take better quality images as I have now become more familiar with camera settings.
AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
I believe that my series of images are strong in demonstrating artist inspiration and with the resources at hand the photographs are of a good standard. I would have produced a better series of images if I had based some around sporting activities as I feel that would have been great for recording movement. Therefore, I will extend my researching by looking further into this to develop my idea and also show more of an influence from J H Lartigue.
